Vitamin C derivative (antioxidant)

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate

INCI: Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate·Studied at 1–5%·Moderate evidence

A water-soluble, pH-stable phosphate salt of vitamin C used as a gentler, non-stinging alternative to L-ascorbic acid, studied for antioxidant support, the appearance of brightness, and the look of blemish-prone skin.

Studied for

  • ·The appearance of brighter, more even-looking skin
  • ·Antioxidant support against visible environmental dullness
  • ·The look of a clearer, less blemish-prone complexion

How it’s thought to work

A vitamin C salt that skin enzymes convert to ascorbic acid; it is far more stable and less irritating than L-ascorbic acid, though the direct appearance evidence is more limited than for pure vitamin C.

Questions

Is sodium ascorbyl phosphate as good as L-ascorbic acid?
It is gentler and much more stable, so it does not sting or brown the way pure vitamin C does. The trade is evidence: the derivative has a thinner published record, so it is a good option for sensitive skin rather than a proven equal.
